What Is a High-Yield Savings Account?

A high-yield savings account — HYSA for short — is a regular savings account that pays you dramatically more interest than the one your bank probably set you up with. Same idea, same easy access to your money. The difference is what the bank pays you for keeping it there.

How it’s different from a “normal” savings account

Big traditional banks often pay close to nothing on savings — a tiny fraction of a percent. Many online-focused banks offer high-yield accounts paying many times more. On the same balance, that’s the difference between earning a few cents a year and earning real money for doing absolutely nothing different.

Why the gap? Online banks have lower overhead (no branches on every corner) and pass some of that savings to you to win your deposit. The traditional bank is betting you’ll never ask.

Is my money safe in one?

Reputable HYSAs are typically held at banks with the same federal deposit insurance (in the U.S., FDIC) as a normal bank account, up to the legal limits. Your money isn’t invested or at market risk — it just sits and earns. Always confirm an account is properly insured before opening it.

What’s the catch?

Honestly, very little for most people. A few things to know:

The rate can change over time (it moves with the broader economy). Some accounts have small rules — a minimum balance, or a limit on certain withdrawals per month. And because many are online-only, you’ll usually link it to your existing checking account to move money in and out, which takes a day or two rather than being instant.

Who it’s perfect for

Your emergency fund and any savings you’ll need in the next few years. It’s the ideal home for money that needs to stay safe and reachable but shouldn’t be losing ground to inflation in a near-zero checking account. Not sure how much to keep there?

It’s not a substitute for long-term investing — over decades, invested money has historically grown much faster. Think of an HYSA as the safe buffer, and investing as the growth engine.

The takeaway

If your savings are sitting in a standard account earning nothing, moving them to a high-yield savings account is one of the easiest money upgrades there is — same cash, same access, more for you.
